This unique lake is perched between the sky and the sea, making many question its very existence.
A Unique Lake in Europe
On the remote Faroe Islands lies a peculiar lake that sits above the ocean. This extraordinary body of water is called Leitisvatn, also known as Sørvágsvatn. The lake’s two names stem from a heated dispute among locals over what to call it. Residents of Sørvágsvatn wanted to name the lake after their village, while those from Miðvágur argued for the name Leitisvatn. Since then, the lake has had two names, though many locals simply refer to it as Vatni (meaning “the lake”).
With a surface area of 3.4 km², Leitisvatn is the largest lake in the Faroe Islands, located between the Norwegian Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. The Faroe Islands operate as an autonomous nation within the Kingdom of Denmark since 1948, much like Scotland’s relationship with the UK. Leitisvatn is three times the size of Fjallavatn, the second-largest lake in the Faroe Islands, which is also on the island of Vágar.
Viewed from above, the northeastern edge of the lake borders Streymoy Island (the largest and most populous island of the Faroe Islands, west of Eysturoy and east of Vágar). The lake’s winding shoreline is easily visible.
Leitisvatn is adored for its surreal, almost unbelievable beauty. Part of its allure comes from its location—it seems to hover precariously between sky and sea, nestled so close to the ocean it almost defies belief.
A Surreal Optical Illusion
Leitisvatn has the ability to “trick” the eyes. Seen from a high vantage point, the lake appears as though its waters are about to spill into the sea at any moment. Occasionally, when the lake overflows, streams of water cascade down like a waterfall into the ocean. However, scientists note that the lake’s surface is about 30 meters above sea level, surrounded by steep cliffs. This height and the optical illusion created by perspective make the lake appear as if it is suspended between sky and sea.
During World War II, the British military used Leitisvatn as a base for seaplanes, even constructing an airfield next to the lake. Today, the airfield is occasionally used for civilian purposes.
A Popular Tourist Destination
Leitisvatn has become one of the most visited attractions in the Faroe Islands. To fully experience its beauty, visitors can start their journey from the town of Miðvágur on the island of Vágar. From the town’s western end, a trail leads hikers towards the southwest along well-trodden paths. After a 1.5-kilometer trek, visitors reach the cliffs where Leitisvatn is spectacularly perched.
Many who visit Leitisvatn describe the journey as unforgettable. With the serene lake on one side and the crashing waves of the ocean just below the cliffs, Leitisvatn is a must-see destination for anyone traveling to the Faroe Islands.
