The Only Underwater-Accessed Art Cave
Cosquer Cave houses hundreds of engravings and paintings from two prehistoric periods: the Gravettian (27,000–19,000 years ago) and the Solutrean (19,000–17,000 years ago). The cave walls feature diverse animal depictions, including horses, bison, deer, ibex, as well as marine life like seals, fish, and jellyfish. Particularly striking are handprints and geometric symbols, believed to have significant ritual or spiritual meanings.
Originally, the cave was on dry land, close to the Mediterranean coast. However, after the last Ice Age, rising sea levels submerged its entrance and part of the cave. This natural preservation has shielded the artwork from the ravages of time while making access incredibly challenging.
Challenges in Exploration and Preservation
Only professional divers equipped with advanced gear and special permits from the French Ministry of Culture are allowed to access Cosquer Cave. The 175-meter (574-foot) entrance tunnel leads to a dry chamber containing the ancient artwork. The journey is perilous, requiring precision and exceptional expertise.
