Nicknamed the “Doomsday Vault,” this facility safeguards millions of seeds from around the world, protecting precious plant genetic resources from threats like climate change, natural disasters, and conflict.
Unique Architecture in the Heart of the Arctic
Inaugurated in 2008, the seed vault is carved deep into Plateau Mountain on Svalbard Island, roughly 1,300 km from the North Pole. Most of its structure lies within the mountain, with the entrance secured by five layers of robust metal doors. The surrounding rock and the Arctic’s naturally cold climate maintain a consistent temperature of -18°C, ideal for preserving seeds for hundreds or even thousands of years.
The entrance resembles a solid concrete structure jutting out from a snow-covered mountain range. Its facade is adorned with an illuminated artwork that reflects the hues of the northern lights, symbolizing life and hope.
A Journey to Protect Global Biodiversity
Inside the vault, over 1.2 million seed samples from more than 5,000 plant species are meticulously stored in airtight aluminum packets. With a capacity to hold up to 4.5 million samples, the vault has the potential to safeguard nearly all of humanity’s agricultural heritage.
The seeds are contributed by gene banks worldwide, serving as a backup should local facilities be compromised.
A notable example occurred in 2015 when the vault provided seeds to the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) after its facility in Aleppo, Syria, was destroyed during the civil war. This underscores the vault’s critical role in ensuring global food security.
