Recently, the country has added yet another marvel to its list of attractions – an awe-inspiring giant eagle sculpture located at the Jatayu Earth’s Center in Kerala. A Legend Brought to Life

The Jatayu bird sculpture, measuring an incredible 200 feet (over 60 meters) from head to tail and perched atop the 1,000-foot-tall (305 meters) Jatayupara hill, holds the title of the largest bird sculpture in the world. It depicts Jatayu, the valiant eagle from the Ramayana, an Indian epic written in Sanskrit. According to legend, Jatayu bravely fought Ravana, the demon king, in an attempt to rescue Goddess Sita, ultimately sacrificing himself for her honor.

The sculpture, designed by Rajiv Anchal, took over a decade to complete and opened to the public after 10 years of dedicated effort. The monument not only commemorates Jatayu’s bravery but also serves as a symbol of protecting women’s honor and upholding justice – a timeless and universal message that transcends religious boundaries.

A Timeless Message

Rajiv Anchal revealed that he first conceived the idea for the sculpture in the 1980s as a student at the College of Fine Arts. Though initially met with enthusiasm, the project faced delays for many years before finally becoming a reality. Importantly, Anchal emphasized that the monument is not meant to serve any specific religion but instead stands as a cultural symbol open to everyone.

“Jatayu sacrificed himself to protect the honor of a woman. This is the purpose and message of the sculpture. People from all walks of life have invested in this project, and people from all faiths will come to see it. My work is for all of them,” Anchal explained.

For those seeking a spiritual connection, an ancient temple near the complex provides additional solace.
