If you were sitting in a restroom worth $270,000, would you really be able to focus—or would you find yourself too distracted by the colorful fish swimming just outside?
For those who love exotic marine life and don’t mind hundreds of eyes peering in, the unique aquarium restroom at a café in Akashi, Japan, might be the perfect spot.
>> Only in Japan: When public toilets look like works of art
Hipopo Papa (formerly Mumin Papa) Café was once one of the most popular date spots along the Hayashizaki Matsue coastline. The café has kept much of its original charm, but after a change in ownership, the new owner decided to create something truly extraordinary in the women’s restroom. Since then, this quirky feature has made the café famous as the only one in Japan—and perhaps the world—where a restroom is surrounded by a giant aquarium.
Technically speaking, it’s a massive fish tank that houses hundreds of exotic fish and even a turtle, wrapping entirely around the toilet area. The café’s owner reportedly invested $270,000 to bring this underwater wonder to life, turning what might have been an ordinary visit into a memorable attraction for both locals and travelers.

Although the restroom is reserved for women, the staff at Hipopo Papa are often happy to show male guests the unusual setup, as long as the café isn’t too crowded.
Of course, there are some downsides to this unique concept. According to Setouchi Finder, certain customers linger longer than necessary inside, simply to enjoy the view, leaving others waiting. At the same time, not everyone feels comfortable with so many creatures “watching” them.
Still, the aquarium restroom has become one of Akashi’s most talked-about attractions—a whimsical blend of creativity, luxury, and a touch of humor that perfectly reflects Japan’s love for surprising design.
