Despite being abandoned for years, this peculiar structure has gradually transformed into a strange yet popular tourist attraction.
Gereja Ayam – The “Chicken Church”
Located deep in the jungles of Java, Indonesia, Gereja Ayam, or the “Chicken Church,” is an unusual architectural marvel resembling a giant chicken. This abandoned structure stands on Magelang Hill, surrounded by dense forests.
Interestingly, the “Chicken Church” was originally designed as a multi-faith prayer house, welcoming worshippers of all religions, including Buddhists, Muslims, Christians, and others.
The visionary behind this project, Daniel Alamsjah, wanted to create a prayer space that symbolized unity and offered help to people of all faiths. His intention was to build a structure in the shape of a dove—a universal symbol of peace.
The Idea and Its Unintended Twist
In 1990, Alamsjah chose Magelang Hill because he felt a divine light guided him to that specific location. He began construction with the ambitious goal of creating a peaceful refuge. However, over time, people began referring to the structure as the “Chicken Church” due to its chicken-like shape, a far cry from Alamsjah’s vision of a dove.
The project also included plans for various humanitarian initiatives, such as spaces for a drug rehabilitation center, facilities for children with disabilities, and areas for individuals with mental health issues.
An Unfinished Dream
Unfortunately, by 2000, rising costs and other obstacles forced construction to halt. What was meant to be a sanctuary for peace and healing became an incomplete, hauntingly abandoned building.
From Abandonment to Tourist Attraction
Despite its eerie, dilapidated appearance, Gereja Ayam has become a popular tourist destination. Its unique structure, coupled with its mysterious aura, draws curious visitors from around the world. Climbing to the top of the “chicken’s head” rewards visitors with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding jungle and distant mountains.
What began as a bold dream for unity and healing is now one of Indonesia’s quirkiest landmarks, blending mystery, creativity, and nature into an unforgettable experience.
Inside the Chicken Church
Inside the Rooster Church there are many rooms with enough functions for people to live in, most of which are unfinished and have deteriorated after many years of abandonment.
