A guide to staying in Myanmar

Yangon Accommodation

Belmond Governor’s Residence

35 Taw Win Road, Dagon Township, Yangon; http://www.governorsresidence.com

The location is a little out of town but the facilities are wonderful. The three grades of rooms are all graceful and well appointed, the pool is beautiful amongst the trees and vegetation and the staff are outstanding. It has an atmosphere of quiet elegance and is very professionally run. There are 2 restaurants.

The Strand Yangon

92 Strand Rd., Yangon; http://www.hotelthestrand.com/

Here you have the chance to experience the full colonial grandeur of a superb hotel with its ceiling fans and high ceilings. The rooms are not particularly grand but the butler service is fabulous. You stay here for the history, not for the luxury. There is certainly history in the bar where cocktails are good and it has the feel of what it must have been like 100 years ago. There is no pool or fitness center in house.

223 Sule Pagoda Rd., Pabedan Township, Yangon; http://www.shangri-la.com/vangon/traders

Sedona Hotel Yangon

No. 1 Kaba Aye Pagoda Road, Yankin Township, Yangon; http:www.sedonahotels.com.sg/Where/SedonaH otelYangon/

This large hotel is a little tired and the location is about 20 minutes from downtown. There is a large outside swimming pool and several restaurants. Extensive reservations are currently undemay (December 2013) which will affect your stay for several months.

Royal Kliattar Hotel

13, Khattar Street, Sanchaung, Yangon;

This newly opened property offers exactly what one would expect from a 3-star hotel: clean and comfortable rooms which are smartly equipped for both business and leisure travelers. The hotel’s location is slightly remote in a quiet area outside the hustle and bustle of downtown: nice for a good night’s sleep and there are a couple of excellent restaurants nearby but you will need to take a taxi to go sightseeing.

Hotel Grand United (Chinatown)

No. 621, Maharbandoola Road, corner of Bo Ywe, Yangon; http://www.hotelgrandunited.com/

This 32 room hotel is situated on the top five stories of a commercial building in the downtown Chinatown area. The rooms are modern, spacious, designed with flair and good value by Yangon standards. A small reception desk area and a restaurant serving breakfast are the only facilities.

Central Hotel Yangon

335/357, Bogyoke Aung San Road, Pabedan Township, Yangon; http://www.centraIhotelvangon.com/

It provides clean, extremely convenient, rather dated economical rooms right downtown. It has a small reasonable restaurant.

12 Pho Sein St., Tamwe, Yangon; http://www.greenhillhotelvangon.com/

This is a large, relatively new hotel, with a narrow entrance from a narrow street. Once inside, the rooms are large and pleasant, the public areas are nice and the staff are accommodating. The restaurant struggles a bit but is adequate.

Eastern Hotel

194/196 Bo Myat Tun Street, Pazundaung Township, Yangon; http://www.myanmareasternhotel.com/

This nice, basic hotel in a fairly central location would suit those on a budget who don’t mind an older-style look. Poor breakfast but friendly staff.

Aureum Palace Hotel

Near Bagan Viewing Tower, Min Nanthu Village Nyaung U; http://aureumpaIacehotel.com/bagan.html

This nicely designed hotel (or over the top, depending on your values), situated within the temple precinct is not for everyone as the owner has strong links with the junta. The infinity edge pool with views over a small lake to some nearby temples is amazing. Food is adequate and there is no alternative nearby as the hotel is remote from most other development. Rooms are modern and spacious.

The Hotel at Tharabar Gate

Near Tharabar Gate, Old Bagan; http://www.tharabargate.com/
